UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre specializes in radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy), which uses high-energy rays to fight cancer cells. For some types of cancer, radiation therapy may be used as the primary treatment, though it also may be used in conjunction with surgery, either before or after a complementary surgical procedure. Radiation also may be used to relieve pain or other problems if a tumour cannot be removed.
