Radiotherapy Services
Radiotherapy
(sometimes called radiation therapy or irradiation) is the
use of high energy waves of particles or x-rays delivered by
a machine called a linear accelerator. During treatment, high
doses of radiation are directed at cancer cells in the body,
which either kills the cells or keeps them from growing and dividing.
UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre offers convenient access to a wide
range of treatment options, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy
(IMRT), a state-of-the-art treatment that delivers radiation to
tumours with greater accuracy and precision, resulting in fewer
side effects for the patient. Our specialized team of radiation
oncology consultants, physicists, and oncology nurses works together
to determine the best course of treatment and care for each patient’s
specific needs.
